How should I treat my outdoor furniture?Updated 8 hours ago

Our outdoor products are mainly made from teak.

This wood is known for being hard-wearing, but it is still important to care for it and protect it so that it lasts.

Teak naturally behaves in two ways if it is left untreated or is not maintained:

  • Whitening, greying
  • Superficial black spots
  • Causes: UV and water

Some customers prefer the bleached, driftwood look of teak and therefore do not treat it. In this case, greying and mould will appear more often, and you simply need to sand the wood when needed with 80 to 120 grit sandpaper.
For very dirty wood, you can use a higher grit.

To prevent greying and mould, it is important to care for and protect your garden furniture every year. We advise against any varnish, wood stain or paint intended for vertical woodwork (shutters, for example). Horizontal and vertical woodwork must be treated differently, and garden furniture counts as horizontal.

For our products, we mainly recommend oil finishes, but please note that oil must be applied to bare wood. If the product has been varnished at the factory, you can sand it on receipt with 80 grit sandpaper, then finish with 120 grit before applying the oil. Oil must be applied to bare wood so that it is properly absorbed.

If the greying is deeply ingrained, you can use a wood restorer (chemical acid). Please read the product's safety instructions carefully before use.
Greying is natural and purely cosmetic: it is not a defect and does not reduce the durability of teak.

The oil we recommend for our products is “Huile Terrasse Bardage, tous bois extérieurs” (decking and cladding oil for all outdoor wood). For a natural wood shade, choose “bois naturel”: the other finishes will change the colour of your furniture. However, tinted oil does add a protective layer against UV.

Here are the treatment steps before first use with “Huile Terrasse Bardage, tous bois extérieurs”, choosing the shade you prefer:

  1. Check whether the wood is untreated or whether a factory treatment has been applied
  2. If there is a factory treatment, sand the product on receipt with 80 grit sandpaper. You can then move to a finer grit for a smoother finish.
  3. Scrub with a brush, rinse the table with clean water and leave to dry
  4. Apply a first coat with a flat brush or a roller
  5. 20 minutes later, apply the second coat
  6. Take a cloth, wipe the brush or roller and smooth the oil to avoid any excess build-up in places
  7. Leave to dry for the time shown on the tin

We recommend carrying out this treatment in the shade, and protecting or bringing your furniture indoors at the end of the season.

We recommend a 1 L tin for a garden set. It will then keep for up to 3 years if it is tightly closed and stored away from frost and heat.
